This stage of schooling comprises seven classes, namely, Preparatory (student ages 5+), Year 1 (ages 6+), Year 2 (ages 7+), Year 3 (ages 8+), Year 4 (ages 9+), Year 5 (ages 10+) and Year 6 (ages 11+). The aim of the education at this level is again, to intellectually stimulate and personally support each student in developing a life-long love of learning. The broad and balanced curriculum has depth and breadth that reflect the complexities of today’s world. Within the curriculum structure, there is flexibility to cater for each individual. The Primary Years build solid foundations for later learning with an emphasis on mastery of basic skills of literacy, numeracy and scientific knowledge, as well as developing cultural understanding, problem solving and personal and interpersonal skills.
The purpose of primary curriculum is to establish a firm foundation of knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values necessary for further learning. Particular emphasis is placed upon students achieving high standards in literacy and numeracy, thereby establishing skills essential for success in all areas of learning.
Adopting the Australian curriculum (Victorian), there is a clear curriculum framework established by the Victorian Department of Education, with which to guide our teachers. This guideline is known as Curriculum and Standards Framework (CSF).
The Curriculum and Standards Frameworks divides itself into 8 key learning areas (KLAs), namely:
1. English, including English as a Second Language (ESL)
2. Mathematics
3. Science
4. Studies of Society and Environment (SOSE)
5. Health and Physical Education
6. The Arts – Divided into Creative Art and Music Art
7. Technology
8. Language Other Than English (LOTE)
In addition to the 8 key learning areas of the CSF, our school also adopts additional key learning areas to give a broad and balanced curriculum for our students and be in line with our missions and goals. The additional key learning areas are:
1. Critical and Creative Thinking
2. Character Education
Critical and Creative Thinking is integrated in English, Mathematics, Science, Studies of Society and Environment and Technology. Extensions are made with the discussion of these subjects which will enhance students’ critical and creative ability.
Character Education is a whole school development program which focuses on students’ development of good character traits and involves discussion and activities which students are required to participate. Our school weekly character education program is outlined at the back of this booklet. Parents can help reinforce character education program at home by focusing on teaching your child the character trait stipulated in our character education program. |
